NJM Packaging Introduces the Expanded AUTOSERT™ Family of Hot Melt Glue Applicators
Aug 15, 2012August 15, 2012 – NJM Packaging introduces the expanded AUTOSERT™ family, the next-generation hot melt glue outsert applicators, which can be configured to apply side-serts or top-serts. Featuring a new rotating three-arm pick-and-place system and hot melt glue adhesion, the 277 SIDESERT and 277 TOPSERT are capable of applying the widest range of outsert sizes, including the thickest pieces of folded literature such as double and triple outserts, with a high degree of accuracy to pharmaceutical containers at very high speeds.
The 277 SIDESERT applies outserts from 0.125 to 1.5 inches (3 to 38 mm) thick, and the 277 TOPSERT handles outserts from 0.125 to 0.75 inches (3 to 19 mm) thick. They place the literature to the sides or tops of round, square and rectangular bottles within a +/- 1.5 mm tolerance.
Achieving line speeds of up to 280 containers per minute, depending on the container size and the outsert size, thickness, weight and folding integrity, today’s AUTOSERT outserters are 25 percent faster than the successful first-generation AUTOSERT, introduced in 2011.
NJM designed the AUTOSERT family of outserters to accommodate the thick outserts that have resulted from the FDA regulations for increased type-size, format and content requirements. Using hot melt glue instead of adhesive tape, heavy outserts are more reliably held in place, while the cost of consumables is reduced.
The new three-arm pick-and-place system features a vacuum cup at the end of each arm, which securely holds the outsert as it is delivered to the container. Thin outserts are handled by picking the outsert from the hopper, while thick outserts are handled by a combination of pushing and picking. For customers that must apply the widest range of outsert thicknesses, the vacuum cups may be change parts. These outserters can be changed over to handle a new outsert size in 10 minutes, no tools required.
The 277 TOPSERT can be integrated with any new or installed third party conveyor. The 277 SIDESERT can be integrated with any new or installed third party conveyor or NJM primary labeler such as the 426 AUTOCOLT, 334 CHARGER or the 326 AUTOCOLT IV. With a compact footprint, AUTOSERT outserters require only 4 feet (1.2 m) along the conveyor for a system that includes NJM’s new magazine carton feeder in addition to an optional vision inspection system and reject system.
NJM designed its new outsert carton magazine feeder, which is standard on the 277 TOPSERT and optional on the 277 SIDESERT, for extended run-time and improved ergonomics. This linear system automatically ejects empty outsert cartons to reduce operator intervention. The carton feeder achieves a run-time of 10 minutes when handling 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick outserts at a speed of 200 per minute. For customers looking for a longer run-time, NJM can customize an extended feeder.
Featuring Rockwell Automation Kinetix servos and a Rockwell Automation Compact Logix PLC, the AUTOSERT family of outserters’ motion control is provided by advanced servo technology, which maximizes the reliability and accuracy of the system.
The 277 SIDESERT handles outserts 1 to 2.75 inches (25 to 70 mm) wide and 1.125 to 4 inches (29 to 102 mm) high and 0.125 to 1.5 inches (3 to 38 mm) thick. The new 277 TOPSERT handles outserts 1 to 3 inches (25 to 76 mm) wide and 1.125 to 3 inches (29 to 76 mm) high and 0.125 to 0.75 inches (3 to 19 mm) thick on containers 2 to 8 inches (51 to 203 mm) in height.
